It depends. On the artist, the font, the colors, the area that you live in, the mood of the artist, the skill of the artist, etc.

There are tattoo artists that tattoo for several hundred dollars an hour (Anil Gupta iirc starts out at $700/hour) and there are some that will give you a bad tattoo for $20.

Most tattoo artists have a minimum amount that they charge because of the single use items and the cost of sterilizing the other items plus they have to be paid for their set up and clean up time. Often this amount is anywhere from $50-75.

If someone is offering to do the tattoo for less than that, be careful. They are possibly cutting corners. Who knows if the corner that they cut is in the area of sterilization.

Colors cost more than the regular black ink. Also realize that certain colors need touching up more often than others (i.e. red, yellow will typically need to be touched up more often than say, blue). The price really varies, yes a bit on how many different colors, but also on the detail/difficulty of the tattoo (I think a bit of location on the body comes into play there) and also by the tattoo artist themseves - you can go to a parlor and two artists can charge different prices for the same tattoo.

Ask friends who've gotten tattoos if they have a place they recommend. Also, when you go to visit the place, ask to see their autoclave (it's the instrument they use to sterilize their utensils) - you want to make sure they're a clean establishment too and that you feel comfortable with the artist themselves. I visited 3 different parlors before I settled on one.

Yes, colors cost more. I would say about 40-60 bucks. I think it really depends on the tattoo parlor you go to. Good luck :)
