I have three zucchini plants and two squash plants in my yard, and they form zucchinis and squashes but then they rot! How do I prevent this? They are planted in urban soils so the calcium level should be high already.
Thanks!

Here are a few suggestions for you;

Although you might have adequate calcium in your soil, overfertilizing your zucchini with nitrogen or potash will often prevent the uptake of calcium into your plants. Try using a fertilizer such as a 5-10-10 rather than one that contains a high amount of nitrogen.

Use a foliar fertilizer that contains calcium and spray it onto your zucchinis...blooms and all (in the early morning to prevent burning from the hot sun). Foliar fertilizers act more quickly and this might prevent more loss before the season ends.

Also...the addition of compost into your soil will help your roots increase the uptake of water and calcium.

Hope this helps reduce your blossom end rot! Good Luck!

squashes require more fertilizer than tomatoes and ect,but also the can be getting rotter from a fungus from over watering or water staying on the squash,because the leaves of a squash plant are so big that they shade the squash not allowing water to evaporate as fast as with other plants!so you can also try cutting a few of the bigger leaves off to help aid in drying.but i know for sure that as soon as you see a rotted suash you must take it off right when you see it,because the fungus will spread to the next one if you dont.i hope some of this helps!good luck!and happy gardening!

According to my infomation, it might be from water stress. Vertical training will make it worse. Try mulching if you haven't already and water regularly but don't water so much that they wilt.
