It's dark as in the person's personality, it doesn't literally mean dark as in visual dark, especially not the skin tone.... And people with dark personalities are very sneaky and hard to understand, like a sniper or better yet.. a ninja...which might make people think they're handsome... or it might be dark as in visually, then they'll think the person is handsome because she never saw him really well, and just assumes how he looks.

Darkness makes a person's features less visible, so they look better in the dark than in the daylight. The date from last night may look completely different the next morning.

I think that saying is referring to someones skin tone...some people have darker skin tones like "Olive" or "Tan"..but then again...at the Club on a Saturday night...If a girl drinks enough she can find 'someone' that's tall dark and handsome lol
