America has always been the hope of a better future and a better life. Considered the "new world" it was a place that people could come to and leave old ways and old cultures, to start fresh. It was also the place that everyone could have a chance at success, even if you were the outcast or the second born. It didn't matter - what mattered was what you could produce from your own abilities.
Even though it sounds trite, it is also because you are relatively free to pursue what you want in life in America. You may have heard the saying, "Only in America," and its true. Because people do have freedom, America remains a haven for creativity, invention and entrepreneurship. These are America's great strengths.
Yes, America has its problems. But at least we try to do what we can to provide justice and opportunity for all. At least we acknowledge our faults and try to hold to higher principles and ideals.
People want to come to America because it is still the "grand experiment" and the place that is "the last great hope on earth."
I'm really sad that there are so many negative answers to this question. We must remember that the practice of America may fall short, but the promise of America still remains bright and clear all over the world.

Because circumstances in the US are often preferable to their home country, where they may face poverty, persecution, or political instability. It's the same reason so many people also seek visas to Canada or the UK.

It's all American Mass Media and greed. With enough hard work, cleverness and a flexible moral code you can make a ton of money here. Plus, we produce a slough of movies and music that tells the world how great it is here.

And sometimes just because it's a nice place to live and they just happened to get married to someone from here.
I had more money and an easier life where I am from, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Lots of different reasons: better standard of living, more freedom,
better jobs/salaries, relatives living here, to study, married to an American, etc.
