When you look at yourself in a mirror you have a specific angle that never changes with respect to yourself. When a picture is taken of you the angle changes according to were the camera is in relation to you. If the camera is lower than your eyes it will likely accentuate your double chin, if it is higher your bald spot may be highlighted. These and others of the sort are areas that you would never 'see' in a mirror unless you were to use two or more mirrors to achieve the same view angle.

Camera lenses distort images slightly. A wide-angle lens will make your features more pronounced and a telephoto lens will flatten your face.

Digital photos often have their aspect ratios altered slightly so the images will fit into the space provided for them in ID cards or image-ratio constraints on Web pages.

Photos show you from only one angle, while we see each other from many different angles and we put those all together in our brains.

Photos also reproduce what you look like under one set of lighting conditions, while we see each other under many different conditions. You probably look a little different in your bathroom mirror than you do in other mirrors.

Some mirrors aren't entirely flat either, so that distorts things too.

3-d effect in the mirror lifts out things the camera can't. If you could look at your picture in an old view master toy, it would look like what you see in a mirror. Or if you look in the mirror with your dig-cam it would look the same as you will see in a photo, because of the single lens verses two lens' of the eyes.

Cameras take in so many details that our eyes usually ignore. Like when a person looks at us, in person, they look at our face as a whole, subconciously checking things like symmetry, whereas a photo gives us a chance to pick up every detail such as blemishes and what's behind us. Then there are lighting issues created by using (or not using) the camera's flash. I think -everyone- looks different in photos from how they look in person. I've always wondered why my gorgeous boyfriend is the most unphotogenic person in the world!

Because in the mirror you are backwards. Totally alters the way you look. Nobody yet has figured out that Clark Kent is Superman because they each part their hair on the opposite side. (And the glasses help too)

Mirrors are backwards and we are always looking straight at ourselves and are sort of ready for it. Photos catch us off guard and are more real; although, in some cases people get shy and do not photograph well. Its hard to say.
