It's not always hard, but sometimes, when a team plays its tails off and loses, it's quite a bummer because they were trying so hard to win. At least the teams the gripes about losing cares about trying to win.

Sportsmanship is great, but you don't want to have an apathetic team out there. True, some teams may believe they're entitled to winning every year because of tradition/past success, and those teams need occasional lessons in humility. But the losing team is not always such a team - maybe they just care too much sometimes.

"Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing." -- Vince Lombardi.

When a team is fairly outplayed, yes, that result is accepted, but if a team accepts too many losses, they never become winners. When Tom Seaver joined the Mets, he rejected the team's image of "loveable losers" and fought fiercely for each game. It paid off two years later with 100 wins and the World Series. And Seaver had one out of every four of those wins. Being a fierce competitor did not diminish the perception of Seaver as a nice guy, either.

I think once you're on a losing organization it becomes easier to accept defeat because winning is not expected. Therefore players become complacent when they win a few, then lose 5 in a row. The Detroit Tigers were complacent in their losing ways, there was a losing mentality here, but they changed up almost everyone, got a new manager who won't allow such a mentality to overtake his team.

Noone likes losing and losing doesnt always mean you werre outcoached or even outplayed for the matter. Sometimes shear luck or the way the ball bounces can determine the outcome of a game. Also, there are lots of players on every team and there is bound to be at leat one who wont accept it and is more outspoken then the teammates

A team doesn't go into competition with the mentality that it will lose. A team who is complacent with losing can accept defeat. A team who feels destined to win, innately thinks it still can.

Loosing sucks especially when teams work hard and do anything to win, and remember because someboby is sad they lost it doesn't mean they don't accept defeat.
