Because the government hasn't figured out a way to control it yet. They regulate alcohol. They put an age limit and laws to alcohol usage.
Alcohol wasn't always legal. Bootleggers would make their own and sell it. The government has to know how they can profit off of something.

That is an excellent question!! I think that the answer is probably that the govt. has not figured out a way to regulate the drug. I personally don't and haven't smoked marijuana for many, many years but I know as a nurse that the effects of marijuana are a lot less damaging than the ones from alcohol. There is also the argument that pot leads to harder drugs which is ludicrous since alcohol does too.
Anyway, that's the only reason that I can come up with because I think alcohol should be outlawed and pot legalized. But, that's just one "ole hippies" view.

Alcohol WAS illigal from January 16, 1920 to December 5, 1933. The Eighteenth Amendment prohibited the sale, transport, ect. of alcohol, but due to a sharp increase in crime and a large public outcry, the Twenty-first Amendment was passed to negate it.
If public sentiment changes, then the government may eventually legalize marijuana. However, the public attitude against marijuana is much harsher and stronger than it ever was toward alcohol. If the Prohibition is any proof, the legalization of Marijuana will have a large impact on crime. However, that would mean more people would have access to mind-altering substances, and you know how much the government likes people chaning their minds.

In a word, money. People make millions off alcohol, but anyone can grow pot so there's no money in it. There is, however, money to be made by prosecutions and incarcerations, especially since the U.S. has tended to privatize prisons. This country has a larger percentage of its own citizens behind bars than any country in the world, and it will get worse before it gets better.
Marijuana became illegal in 1937 as a result of propaganda spread primarily by the duPont company. They had just invented nylon but were having a hard time marketing it because hemp had such a secure place in the market. They began spreading all kinds of lies about how it made people crazy, etc. As long as pot was confined to jazz musicians and black people, no one worried about it. As it began spreading to the white population, people began to see opportunities for oppression. The rest is history.

a number of years in the past, in Ohio, a freight practice slammed right into a passenger practice killing ~30 passenger. The engineer of the freight practice surpassed over the "music sparkling" warning lighting fixtures a number of miles till now the accident. He additionally admitted to smoking marijuana basically before the crash. Marijuana, like alcohol, impairs the purchasers judgement. The long-term wellbeing risks accociated with alcohol use/overuse are properly documented. There have not been any significant analyze on the long-term wellbeing risks linked with marijuana use/overuse widely speaking because of the fact marijuana is illegitimate and would not have an identical investment available for analyze. besides the fact that one significant learn chanced on that a individual who "smoked one marijuana cigarette an afternoon had an identical threat of coming up lung maximum cancers as a individual who smoked one tobacco cigarette an afternoon." the reason marijuana is illegitimate is going before to the early twentieth century. Racism did play a element, besides the fact that it had greater to do with migrant workers coming to the U.S. from Mexico. At one time alcohol grow to be unlawful as properly, yet all that did grow to be create unenforceable regulations and placed greater funds interior the wallet of Al Capone and Joe Kennedy. Had marijuana been as standard as alcohol, lower back whilst it grow to be outlawed, i'm particular those regulations could've been repealed as properly. Marijuana use skyrocketed interior the western international in the process the counter-way of existence era of the 60's. i've got faith between the justifications it maintains to be standard, surprisingly between youngsters, is that that's greater low-cost and less difficult to acquire than alcohol.

Because there has been so much government hype about it, like most drugs it was illegalized due to racial reasons. People in the south believed that "drug crazed ******" were going to kill and rape everyone, and that helped motivate the harrison tax act to get passed, and then later on the controlled substances act. All the petty drug users in prison and all the drug-related crime and violence would be massively reduced if they would wise up and just legalize it. I say this and I don't even want to touch the stuff.

IN USA YOU ARE responsible enough TO GO TO WAR AT 18, buy weapons, buy alcohol, drive a car at age of 16....but you can not buy marijuana!! Very absurd , right? There are big companies earning lots of money in this as well...
This does not happen in Holland....since they can not stop selling alcohol, they did not stop marijuana and other drugs....but they dont allow weapons!! I It makes much more sence.

Sucks doesn't it? I guess because if they make marijuana legal everyone will be walking aound high at all times. Instead of cigarette breaks employees will be taking blunt breaks and I don't think that would be a very good idea.

You have to remember, Alcohol itself does not kill 100.000/yr. Its People who use alcohol excessively that do stupid things. Same with Marijuana.people get high and do stupid stuff. People get drunk and do stupid stuff. Its not the products themselves, its the people who use the products excessively
