It's funny that you ask this. I hear about this happening all the time but have never lost a sock in the dryer.
Every time I seem to be missing a sock, I go through all of the clothes I took out and the missing sock is always just stuck deep inside a shirt or pair of pants due to static cling. I have never actually "lost" one yet.

I found the answer. My sister tells me if you look well inside the dryer and to the very top of it, you'll find a few socks that have clung onto the static, thus hiding from our inquisitive eyes.
I feel bad letting the secret out. It may destroy a decades long Urban Myth. But you wanted to know.lol-t

I read it in "Mad" magazine about 25 - 30 years ago. It is called a "supper-sock-sucker" that is made with each and every dryer. Eventually it dissolves into lint; and now you know why you sometimes have more lint on your dryer vent on some days.
Or, if like me, you go look in you kids room under their bed.

I found that they sometimes get lost in the washer, not the dryer. I had to pay $85 for someone to come over and check why my washer wouldn't drain water, and he found a piece of clothing stuck in the drainage hose. Now I put all the small stuff in a mesh bag and wash and dry them together. The only problem is, you can't put a ton of stuff in one bag or they don't dry well.

Each pair of socks has one negative and one positive every once in a while a positive or negative one will touch the same in another pair canceling each other out, hence only losing one from a pair!! LOL

good question.
Its entropic value cannot be lost, but might shift, what do we really know about socks?
their shape may be a non-conforming dynamic within this universe with the ability to shift in and out of reality at their own will.
we should keep an eye on such garments, who knows what they're plotting?

They are in a huge pile on the moons surface, the dark side. They are all right socks because you have the left ones.

I wish I knew the answer. Finally got sick of all the lost socks and now safety pin them together before they go in the hamper.

Having been good little socks, they are rewarded by going to sock Nirvana.
