all 8th graders are wrapped up in boys but not all 8th graders are mature enough to handle it all. I started group dating when I was 13 and so didn't my boys. If they followed the rules, came home when they were told or close enough to it (only once in awhile do they get away with this) stay out of trouble and continue good grades, then and only then did I start the trust part of single dating. Two of my boys made it by 15 and the last had to wait till 16 as he thought he was better and didn't have to listen to all the rules. He found out otherwise, but understood and worked at regaining my trust. You know your child best don't go by what the neighbors kid is doing. If you want a good child, its a two way street you both have to work at it and in the end it is worth it for both of you.

I would say 16. What does a 13 year old need to be dating for? She should be out there having fun with her friends not worried about boys. She has the rest of her life to do that.

I think 13 is really to young. The only reason people really date is to find someone to share their life with - and at 13 she's to young for that. When she is in high school I think group dates are very acceptable, especially in public places such as movie theaters, bowling alleys, and skating rinks. That way they can be around a group of people, have fun, and the chances of sex is lesser. Of course in large groups, the chance of peer pressure is higher. Try to convince her that right now she needs to focus on her friendships and save dating for high school - she's only got a year left! I think going on dates, in a car, she should have her own license - it's just kind of a responsibility thing and something that she can look forward to. I remember high school and some of middle school very well. I'm only 22 so I remember all of the pressures of sexual stuff when on dates - even in middle school when we went to the movies - the boys would want to put there hand down my pants. And on dates boys would want to make out in the car. Thank God I wasn't stupid and didn't do all of that crap - but the pressure is there. I wouldn't even give the chance of that kind of pressure to even be there.

16 for dating. How about group dates for 8th graders? Get your daughter to invite a few of each gender for a movie/amusement park, bowling/etc.
i teach 8th grade. I see many parents think that their child is grown up enough to date, but I don't think they have the maturity and yes, the idea of getting too wrapped up is very real. I see it too often.
Things are much safer in a group.
Good Luck - 8th grade is a hard year.

13 would be the only age that a 13 year old could begin dating.
