My computer.. when the AIM screen goes to open it takes a long time to load, and my internet does too, and most of the time you can see my computer background through the screens. i've done virus scans with 3 different programs, so that can't be the cause of it. does anyone know what else it could be or how to fix it?

I assume that you are using windows pc. There are two problems that might cause this. First, check if you have enough system RAM. Right click on the My Computer and click on properties, on the first page you will be able to see how much system RAM you have, I'd recommand increasing it. Another problem that can cause such thing is if you have a very slow internet line, like dial-up or slow shared line. Make sure if you can increase your internet line speed. To optimize your pc you can use software like "TuneUp Utilities" or such software. I hope this should solve your problem.

Ok, most everyone already answered some of the causes that could be slowing your computer down.

To remove startup items, if your running ME, go to the start button, and select run, enter msconfig, and then go to startup tab. Only two that need to be checked are explorer, and systray.

If running XP, do the same thing for ME but under the startup section, I believe that you check which processes you don't want running at startup.

Also, defrag your computer, run a scan disk (thorough), run a spyware program to rid your computer of them, delete all of your cookies, and temp internet files. Then get a program that will defrag your ram, I know system mechanic 6 will do this, not sure of any others out on the market. You might could go to http://www.download.com and find it there.

Could also be that your registry has broken links, shortcuts, invalid shortcuts, etc. This is due to improper removal of some programs, or various other reasons. System mechanic will take care of all of these things mentioned, and should return your computer back to its original speeds.

Point to remember, not all virus scans pick up all viruses. Check out http://www.pctools.com for further info on that.

Good luck with your tasks ahead.

It might not be a virus, but it could still be spyware or adware. To scan with these, use a program like Spybot S&D or Ad-Aware. Your computer could also be slowed by installing too many programs. If many of these programs are set to load at startup, then your computer will be slowed. If your computer is more than 4 years old, then its just too old and you should upgrade it or get a new one. Another way to make your computer faster would be to format your harddrive (Warning: This will erase ALL data and programs on your harddrive.)

You could just not have enough memory in your computer. That's usually the number one reason why people's computers run slow. You can upgrade it, and memory is cheap now so it's not that big of a deal, or you can just get around it by not having as many programs running at the same time.

Check to see what all is running in the background on your computer. Delete the ones you no longer need. Also try defragmenting your computer. GOOD LUCK !

You could try emptying your temporary internet files and cookies. They can accumulate if you do not delete them often, and cause your internet browsing to really hang. Go to Control Panel > Internet Properties > click on delete cookies, click on delete temporary internet files. Could free you up a bit if they have stacked up too high.

You probably have too many startup items. Try to remove some of them.
