Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) with the band The First Edition.
Although he did not compose it, the song was his first top ten hit and IMO his best. According to Rogers, the tune was Jimi Hendrix's favorite song.

Coward of the County. It talks about a boy named Tommy whose dad died in prison when he was 10, and how his dad told him not to do the things that he done and that it doesn't mean you're weak if you turn the other cheek. Then he goes on to tell him he doesn't have to fight to be a man. The song goes on and talks about how these men attacked his love, Becky. He opens the door and sees her crying and walks to find the Gambling boys at the bar. As he walks in, they laugh at him and he turns and heads toward the door and they say, "look, ole yellow's leavin". You could've heard a pin drop when Tommy stopped and locked the door. Everything he had bottled up inside him, he let it out on them. Then as the last one falls he says, "I promised you dad, not to do the things you had. I walk away form troubles when I can. Now please don't think I'm weak I didn't turn the other cheek
and papa I surely hope you understand, sometimes you got to fight when you're a man." I love that song!

my husband thinks "The Gambler"; thinks it's a good Life Lesson song. I like Ruby because me and my mom would sing it together at the top of our lungs...so it's just an emotional connection for me...plus it's fun to sing!

coward of the county...because sometimes we are all scared and when we work up the courage to face our fears it usually turns out not to be so bad.
