Why is America obsessed with physical beauty, and yet we're the fattest nation in the world?

I ask myself that question every day I go to the gym...I guess if all we see on the street are fat and ugly ppl, then when we see someone who looks good, we consider them to be some kind of superhuman...

Because if someone already has a weight problem and they are concentrating on being skinny to be beautiful if it doesn't happen quickly they get annoyed and pissed off and start to eat more. ALSO we have the least healthiest food in this nation. No one really knows how to eat right anymore... people concentrate more on what tastes good. Not to mention no one wants to work out... every one here wants the easy way out, to take a pill or go to a surgeon and have it all fall off. Some people just get too big and then have no choice. It's sad. It really starts from childhood. Parents need to make sure they show their kids how to eat right and exercises EVERY DAY or the vicious cycle will continue. This is coming from a women who had a lot of problems with weight as my family does but I take care of myself... That is why I fit the Army standards for weight and my family? well lets not get into that. So your answer:

Short temper,don't like to stick to anything
Lazy, don't want to get up off the couch
Taught to do the wrong thing by their parents
And impatient, nothing can happen quick enough

well actually america is no more obsessed with physical beauty than other countries.if you notice that around the world france, latin america, asia, egypt, physical beauty has been cherished throughout history it just seem more ridiculous in the USA because we are more tantalized by TV and tabloids and not by the more poignant topics we sould be concerned with. I guess the fat thing is more about a social and economic class division between the haves and have nots.Poorer people tend to eat more junk food than they need and at that point whats the use in exercise. Its a lot easier to sit back and eat a tub of fried whatever and watch the beautiful people during the academy awards than care about calories and clogged arteries. The worst part is that obese parents perpetuate the problem by teaching their kids horrible eating habits.

Because it's a society that believes you can have it all. You can have your cake and eat it too! You can have rich fatty foods but you should strive for beauty, uh, well we all know that doesn't work! Indulgences have create bodily excesses and popular beauty ideals have created artificial and unattainable images which lead to obsessions. Also hypocrisy is deeply entrenched in the American psyche. Isn't this dualism of fatness and plastic beauty just insanely contradictory? These sorts of blatant contradictions are so common in the US.

I've wondered that my whole life I guess whoever these people are that are obsessed with physical beauty. Which is probably well over half of the earths population. Will never learn that beauty is only skin deep and that nothing lasts forever.

Because our social collective believes that skinny people are either wealthy or young. Two very important qualities to people for some reason. We are Fat because we sit on our butts all day at work and sit on our butts on the commute home because we live too far from out from work. and if we do have time to eat it is usually onthe way to a function for our childern so we have to grab some fast food on the way. it is a terrible illness. Not within our bodies but within our society.

I'm not sure that America is the fattest nation in the world..although it's certainly up there.....I think it's because America has is standards only with youth..and the unattainable...
