I am sorry to be naive but I have just bought a computer and when accessing the internet, I sometimes get a web page appear: About:blank with nothing on it. I know nothing about computers, so ask simply: What purpose and why?

Thankyou for your answers but...
Many of you have suggested I have a problem with adware or spyware. I am using Norton Antivirus which detects nothing and it is NOT my homepage that is About:blank.
Basically, sometimes when opening a web page, another will appear at the same time stating About:blank. I close it but wonder why this is happening.
But thanks again.

Simply just to show a blank HTML document. You can set your browser to About:Blank it you don't want any particular website showing when you open up your browser. If you want to change that (In IE6) go to tools > internet options > Under general tab, home page just type in the website you want your browser to start the you open it.
About:Blank can also be spyware that hijacked your PC. Here's how to remove it if that's the case http://www.pchell.com/support/aboutblank.shtml

Hi, This is a classic case of either Adware or Spyware, no matter what you try it will keep coming back unless you take some action and install some 3rd party software - this usually costs an arm or a leg - DONT download anything from the internet saying it will solve it - they will search the pc and say there is a problem and then charge you for providing the removal tool. A better option if you can is to return the pc to factory settings - this should solve the problem. I had the same thing the other month and had to do just that. I now have an Image File created by Acronis True Image that has all the important software so that in a similar event I can re-instate every thing in 20 mins - Hope this helps

The About:blank page is a default page to Internet Explorer that is displayed when it cannot open a particular web site, or if no website was specified for it to go to. For example if you don't have a default start page set, Internet Explorer will use About:Blank as you default start page.

Your homepage has been 'hijacked'. Do a google search on About:Blank and you'll learn all about it and how to fix it. It's harmless but annoying.
In the future, take care when opening mail attachments.

About:blank is the URL interpreted by your browser as the command to display a blank page.

basically it is known as 'finger trouble at the computer'. You are still learning! You can't bugger up the daft machine so if it gives you ANY trouble, turn it off at the wall and switch on again. You have the rest of your life to be as smart as the daft bats who are throwing silly advice at you.
