microsoft outlook is a program which lets you check your mail and use the calender to plan meetings etc.

MS Outlook is a very popular email, calendar and contact management program, widely used in corporate and government environments. It's a very powerful and customizable program, and it does have a fairly steep learning curve. But once you learn how to work with it, it's wonderful to use.
I would suggest that you use the 'help' feature on Outlook, or borrow or purchase one of the many good books about this software.
If you are not into the heavy features of Outlook, you can use Outlook Express, which is a watered down, home user version of the program. But I prefer Outlook simply because of its many features.
