I believe that it means that the watch is self-winding and is wound by the wearer's motions. Inside the watch is a semi circle metal plate that has a ratchet so that when it moves it only winds the watch when moving in a clockwise direction. When fully wound a safety device stops it from breaking the mainspring. It is so called because the system was invented by the Japanese but does not necessarily mean that the watch was made there.

To the point, the parts ticking in side where made in Japan. Like a Fossil's innards are made in Germany or Swiss made. Then the face and the numerals could've come from china too, oh and the leather from a cow in Zimbabawe S.A. =o) Its' just about the parts.
