Well, the Western World is based on the principles developed in ancient Greece! Greece was not a military Empire, but an intellectual one working not for military, financial and ruling powers, but to improve living standards and elevate humanity and knowledge! That is why I consider Greece as the greatest Empire! Greece, the Mother of Democracy was not a centralized Empire, but composed by city states, independent and uniting only for creative reasons, like sciences, sports, arts, etc. It is estimated that one fourth of the world's population was Greek!
A short time outcome of the "Greek" empire was Alexandre's empire, extending from the Balkans, to Indus river and Africa to Central Asia. More than 70 new cities were founded in a span of fifteen years extending Greek civilization to the East!
Definitely, military empires are known better and as such among the greatest is the Roman Empire.
Also, after the middle ages we have the British, Spanish and Portuguese empires with colonies all over the Globe!

At the peak of its time the British Empire spanned the globe: "The sun never sets on the British Empire". As far a size goes the British take it, they even tried to invade my country (Argentina) in the 1800's, its cool though at that point we beat them... not so lucky in the 80's....hehe.
The British Empire just used an idea that as first started by the Romans... The Roman Empire was the first of its kind and at its time it was so much powerful than anything else around it.

Well, I know the current largest empire, the USA. Come on, we are a big bully in terms of international law. We are intimidating. We support our rich and deny our poor. We rally behind a religious fanatic. Isn't that what all previous empires did?

No one has ever surpassed the Roman Empire in wealth relative to today's dollars but the Ming Dynasty was the greatest of all in my opinion.

Check the Romans, Ottomans, and the Mongolian/Chinese empires.
And modernly consider Britain, they had a heck of a lotta colonies.
