We just rented The Pink Panther with Steve Martin and I think that would be suitable for a family. Also the original Pink Panther series with the late Peter Sellers was hilarious. Although I have not seen Steve Martin's version of Cheaper by the Dozen 1 or 2, I think they are probably suitable for family.
Hope this helps.

A lot of the movies these people have mentioned are definitely not suitable for the entire family. I don't think PG-13 and R movies are suitable for children. Her are my picks:

Hoodwinked
Madagascar
Wallace & Grommit - Curse of the Were Rabbit
The Long, Long Trailer
Freaky Friday (both old and new versions)
The Parent Trap (old version)
I.Q.
The Princess Bride
The Labyrinth
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Shark Tale
The Incredibles

Matilda is a funny movie for the whole family! I enjoyed it very much. As a matter of fact, this movie is in my Top 5. It came out in the 90's but I still watch it. If you haven't seen it before I'm sure that you won't be disappointed. This is not your average kiddie-movie, so be prepared!

There's loads of 'em... I especially like the oldies. Good clean fun -like My Fair Lady and such. Disney movies are always good to go for. If you are looking for something a little more current, I would suggest something along the lines of Shrek. You're best bet is to go to a video store and cruise the comedy section. Pick something you've never seen before, but you feel comfortable with b/c it has a comedian you really like or a rating that you find acceptable (like "G" or "PG"). Ultimately, I guess it depends on the ages of the children in your family. Personally, I like the kid movies like "Rookie of the Year" "A Kid in King Arthur's Court" "Black Knight" "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" "Ghostbusters" and so forth...

My favorite movie of all time was "Coneheads", its humor is absurd, I think everybody from an aged adult to a small child would find this movie funny and entertaining. Nothing dirty in it, either, if I recall...

"The Producers" (the old one is slightly funnier than the new one); the Beatles' "Help"; "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum;" "Ferris Buehler's Day Off."
