Get a 360 account, and upload a personal favorite photo there. Then, go into your profile here and click "Edit My Info" - from there, scroll to the "picture" choices and click on "Use My 360 Picture."
Or, while selecting a pic, you can use (and edit) your avatar.

You need to have a picture in your profile, but once you do, click your name and it will take you to your profile and then click the edit tab and it will have a section for you to change you display picture.
You can create an avatar in your yahoo messenger, just look for the section "My display image" in the menu, and then click to customize your avatar.
