Dontrelle Willis would bat 7th or 8th from time to time under their manager last year.

I believe that Tony LaRussa used to bat the pitcher 8th sometimes so that the pitcher is not the last out before the top of the order. I don't know that he's done it recently though.

I know I have watched games where a pitcher hasn't batted last but cannot remember when or who it was. Pitchers have historically been the weakest hitters which is why managers put them in the 9th place in the batting order but managers can place them anywhere in the lineup.

it depends on how well they hit..Orel Hershiser for the Dodgers was an extremely good hitter..and I think he has been either 6th or 7th in the batting order..
