It would have been nice if Katami managed to do his reforms and decrase the power of the mullas, but that didn't happen. As it stands, those in power there are trying to push the society back to the middle ages with the re-introduction of Sharia law. It would be much better if the gates of ijtihad were re-opened and the society could move forward again.

It has a fascinating ancient history.
It is a pity that most people generalize and see only negative things. Every country has its faults.
I have read about Zarathustra. he has inspired western artists to make awesome novels like Nietzsche and music like Richard Strauss
My brother once appeared on the opera Turandot. he played the Prince of Persia. he looked awesome .
I think that this country has excellent cinematographers like Majid Majidi. I love his movie Children of Heaven. The principal actors are two beautiful and talented children with soulful eyes.
I own the DVD and I show it to my students. Even if they do not understand Farsi, they can understand the movie. Cinema, when is well done is universal.
If you are Iranian I wish you the best. If not, I wish you the best too.

Of people I've met, muslims say Iran, and Baha'is say Persia. It makes me wonder which you are.
Iran is a nation struggling to rid itself of a religious dictatorship and return to the secular democracy it once was. The majority of the people want change and the religious nutballs are trying to prevent it.
The problem is, instead of western nations supporting the democratic movement, they are strengthening the religious nutcases by isolating Iran. It's as if the west *wants* Iran to stay a fascist religious dictatorship; it's certainly easier to deal with a one-issue government than to admit US and UK involvement in destroying Iran's democracy back in 1953.

Positives:
Iran has been a center of great artistic talent for centuries. I think that conservative governments there and elsewhere have pushed down artistic expression, though.
Iran established back in the 9th century one of the most stable forms of religious Islamic governments, as opposed to Turkey's secular Islamic government. This is a fact that few appreciate. The balance of powers between the administrative/executive and judicial parts of the government is quite different from western governments, but holds steady nonetheless.
Negatives: Iran MUST begin a dialogue with the rest of the world if it is to maintain its prestige. Even though the US is in a pissing match with that country, it is a stabilizing force in the Islamic world and one of the few powers in that area that has not fallen TOO much to corrupting influences from outside. Compare them to Saudi Arabia, for instance, an intolerant, wealthy and relatively corrupt state that has aligned itself with the west's interests.
Hate Iran all you want -- and i find plenty wrong with it, but it has stayed true to its own principles.

Isn't that another country which rather than build a good Tourist haven has chosen to live in Envy and hate of others who just need to relax? Think about it, nobody needs anger, its possible that too much anger causes cancer, so why not legalize in your country the sale and enjoyment of Hashish? Making sure they have to come to your country to enjoy it. Guarranteed you will get good crisp foreign dollars to build up your credit with the world banks. The prudes who believe drugs are bad have never been in pain, or want the rest of the world to suffer and who needs such evil thoughts?
