Back in the old days, no teams wore names. The numbers represented the pitching order, and you scorecard gave you the names of the hitters. Pre-TV & radio, when the only time you saw a game, it was at the stadium. When they started requiring it back in the 50's, teams who currently wore no names were grandfathered in, and not required to wear them. This was before Steinbrenners time. Some of the other teams only wear names sometimes. The Red Sox have a no-name version of their uniform, which you will see reasonably often, and the Dodgers generally never wear names, either. Over the years, I have seen both Pirates & Giants uniforms without names.
No-name uniforms are a not so subtle reminder "We've been here a LONG time".

Some sports people believe that putting names on the uniform promotes players going for individual goals rather than team play.

i agree it's strange and i don't like it, but i suppose it's partly tradition and partly to promote team unity rather than idiviualistic glorification.
