you need to find out their service provider, for example if he is with verizon then you can go to verizon.com and send him a message to his cell phone by typing it on the computer.. there is a 160-character limit though. check this out:

Learning to spell first might be a bonus. Then go to the cellphone provider site and they will have a page where you can send a text message.

Try www.vazu.com. I use it to text to all my buds with no problem, regardless of their cellphone provider. and it's free.
