For me, I finally have around $800 after my major bills including paying myself first for all misc. spending. I just got my engineering degree recently and finally paid off my car so that helps raise my income. I use to have almost no free money for a long time while I was going to school. It is hard, but if you set a goal to improve your life you can usually make it. I drive a 2001 Kia Rio without air in Oklahoma, bought the car in Ohio. I am paying more rent than I should, but I am in the newest apartments in town. I am trying to finally live well within my means to safe for the future and avoid past money mistakes that lead to my divorce and bankruptcy.

The more money you make, the more you spend. That's just a fact.

I don't have rent to pay, my mortgage is only $290 a month, we have our own water well, and have to haul our own trash to the dump. So, other than the mortgage, three electricity meters, and the propane bill, we don't put out a lot of cash. Oh, I forgot car payments and insurance bills.

So we maybe put out a grand a month in that sort of stuff.

We bring in really good money - and no, I'm not going to say exactly how much - but remember, the more you make...

As our income increases, we buy better foods, we spend more on entertainment, we end up making more loans to friends, and donations to charitable causes. My husband and I are also in the middle of remodeling a very old building into a new home, and that alone is eating up the "left over money."

You can't realistically ask how much is left over if you're not including food and entertainment, because those costs increase as the amount you make goes up. It all comes under the heading of expenses.

And of course, there are always the "mental health" shopping sprees. LOL.

Assuming I earn 2000 per month, after deduction on rent, electricity, water, mortgage or any other monthly bills..etc, Im left with approx 1000 to play with. But then again, this might be a rough gauge as it will very much depend on the how strong the currency of a particular country is.

My husband and I live in a small city. We spend approx. 25% of our income on our morgage, taxes, insurance, and basic utilities. Internet, tv, phone and cell phones take another 10%. Car loans and gas currently cost about another 20%. Groceries, dining out, clothes, and pet supplies take about 20%. The last 25% is spent on medical bills/insurance, household stuff (furniture, maintanance), and leisure/entertainment.
