You can be prosecuted and held responsible for any damage or injury caused by your wake.
Just like you can for operating a vessel intoxicated

there is no federal law concerning boat wakes. As a boater, a licensed boater or a professional skipper, you are responsible for your wake. If you are going to fast or you are in an conjested area and you cause soil erosion or pass to quickly by a boat and somebody gets hurt. One can call the coast guard and file a complaint with them or you can go to the department of transportation and do the same.

As far as it being a Federal Law. I don't know. But I do know that on Florida Lakes and rivers that are posted "No Wake Zones", if someone reports you for damage done from your wake, your ARE responsible for damages. But that may very in different states.

It's not a federal law, but wakes and the destruction from them can get you a ticket from the local law enforcement agencies.
