He accepted less money to play in NY than Detroit offered. WTF? I, for one, feel betrayed, as all the wings faithful should.

July 9, 2006 -- Brendan Shanahan, a three-time Stanley Cup winner in Detroit and one of the NHL's most accomplished veterans, was seeking a new challenges.
He'll find them next season on Broadway with the Rangers.

The Post has learned the 37-year-old free-agent left winger has accepted a one-year contract worth approximately $4M to join the Rangers after spurning more lucrative offers from both the Red Wings and Canadiens.

He did stay loyal...loyal to his bank account. Detroit could not offer him 4 mil a year. Wouldnt make any sense.

You think Detroit offered Shanny more than 4 Mil? I don't think so. Detroit still needs a starting goalie and soe forward help. Paying Shanny that much would kill their cap.

As for Loyalty, it's professional sports. The players go where the money is and especially now with the cap you may as well get used to players moving all over the place.

Detroit would not go more than 4 million for one year. I was kind of disappointed in his decision to leave. He was the leading goal scorer for Detroit last season at 40 goals. I am thinking he is going to play for the Rangers for that one season, then sign back with Detroit for one year to end his career here. Many players do that.

Loyalty? These have been Brendan's teams during his career:

From 87-91
New Jersey Devils
From 91-95
St. Louis Blues
From 95-97
Hartford Whalers
From 97-06
Detriot Red Wings

Shanny's been a journeyman most of his career, so I don't think you can blame this one on loyalty.

I agree with the betrayl....but this is the common occurence since the salary cap. The Wings have to make room for the future. They weren't as aggressive as they could have been in the old days. I felt the same way about McCarty last year.

If someone offered you job security this late in your career., wouldn't you take it?? There is no loyalty in the NHL anymore!!! The Wings would have crapped on him at some point!!! He obviously didn't like what the Wings were telling him!!!

"Shanny" isn't loyal to anyone himself and the Red Wings have to get younger to compete in the new NHL. Look at Colorado - they're going through some real pain.

Why would anyone want a 37 year old player, who can't play in the "new" NHL?

Be happy he isn't with detroit anymore.

There is no such thing in pro sports.
It is usually money that talks.
In this case who knows.
Maybe a better chance at the cup and more$ in the long run.
There is no shortage of $$$$$$$$$$$ in the big sour crab apple.
