In the middle ages the name John Doe was used in an indictment when an unknown person, or persons, were involved in a crime. There was actually a whole host of such names that were used, but only John Doe and, sometimes, Richard Roe have survived.

I believe these terms were used because at the time the names John/Jane and Doe were among the most common in the country. It's sort of like the saying "regular Joe".

Wish I knew. Jack and Jill went up the hill, and I know what a John is, but Jane, I'm curious also. Doe a Deer, a Female Deer. What a screwy language we have.

The first person that answered your query, we shall refer to them as John/Jane Doe, did so with plagerism at the seed of their heart. I say this ONLY to warn you.

This question has been ASKED and ANSWERED already, and this John/Jane Doe is NOT a teacher of law, as they would allude, and have us believe.
