Where can a get a stand-alone shower rail, that requires no fixing to a wall/ceiling?

Don't know about stand alone but you can get expandable ones with suckers on each end - this sticks to opposite walls (John Lewis Partnership).

Never heard or seen such a thing. They might make one that uses sky hooks to hold it up!

You might be able to get something like this http://www.splashdirect.com/acatalog/Stainless_Steel_Shower_Rods.html which is sprung loaded so that it grips the walls at each end
