Public Relations has many facets, but basically it is about managing the company's or brand's image with consumers.

It could take the form of a PR event for consumers (e.g. Target's vertical runway - a fashion show on the side of Radio City Music Hall); in this case, the goal was to create a big buzz w/ consumers and to get the media to pick it up and publicize. In that case, the media/airtime is free (vs. TV commercials where you have to pay for media time). Additionally, PR can come across as being a 3rd party (or neutral endorsement). This happens a lot when magazines, newspapers, TV news talk about an event...it sounds more credible vs. a 30s commercial. But, many times, companies will feed these stories to the news because of all the good (and efficient) marketing they get. This is frequently done w/ beauty editors where cosmetic companies will send them free samples of new products and give them ideas about stories to write that feature their products.

PR can also manage a company's image, esp when it comes to financials. So, they help put some spin on the annual reports and press releases regarding earnings.

PR is also there to help manage through crises (e.g. remember the Tylenol scare years back?). They quickly recalled all the products to help put the consumers' minds at ease. They handled things very well.

Public relations help corporations build favorable reputation. But it does not only go that way. PR also maintains goodwill among employees, between employer and its employees and between the company and its clients/customers. The difference of hiring a PR pro/consultant than managing your own PR campaign is that public relations know better in terms of relating to your target market and the media in general. In addition, the result of communication campaign by a PR pro is more viral and lasting compared to plain advertising or own campaign promotion.

PR is basically the face of the organisation. PR attempts to shape the publics perceptions of the organisation.

It is a very powerful tool for generating sales, brand awareness, loyalty, positive conditioning, etc. It is basically a medium for which the company can effectively communicate within its market.

The main reason for PR for the majority of firms is to increase sales, and or maintain positioning within an industry.
