I am 16 and have used tampons three or four times. Each time it hurt very badly. I started when I was 12. Once I wore one to go swimming and it took 10 minutes to get it out because it hurt so much! Now I can't even get one in. I've tried them all--the curved ones, the tiny "teen" ones, everything.

You're probably not putting them in far enough. The string should only be hanging out about an inch from your body. Also, try using lubricating jelly like KY jelly on insertion. That will help.

When I was your age, it hurt too - until I realized the "right" way to put them in. Good luck.

You are not putting them in correctly. I use O.B. without the the applicator so I can control it better. They have a type called Silk Ease which is much more comfortable to insert. Read the instructions that come in the box. When you insert it, take a deep breath and relax. I usually put a foot up on the side of the bathtub to brace myself and get better access. Point the tampon toward your back. Your vagina is not straight up and and down. It is slightly tilted, so follow the tilt. There's a diagram in the instructions. When you have the tampon in correctly, you should not feel it. If you do feel it, it may not be in far enough. If don't feel it but your lower back aches, you may have it in wrong. Take it out and start over with a new one. You should change your tampon every 4 hours or so, or every time you go to the bathroom. Practice makes perfect. I used to hate tampons when I first started, but now I feel gross if I don't use them. They are so much cleaner than using only pads. Good luck.

Hi.Im the same age and I started using tampons last year. Here are my answers to your questions: So when you start using tampons did you still get leaks on your underwear? I didnt, but use a panty liner just in case. Do tampons hurt? Not really. If you put them in right, you cant tell they are in. When did you start using them? Last year. Did it work the first time? Yes

I agree with Kiki-joy. If you are not inserting them in fully, it will hurt. Applying a little KY jelly to the tip before applying will help.

Remember once a tampon is insert properly, you shouldn't even know it's there. That's why I love them. It's much better than sitting on a diaper... *smile*

when you put it in and you still feel it that means it is not deep enough. When you pull it out and it hurts that means it is not fully absorbed. For some people they are not able to use tampons for some reason.

tampons should not hurt, at all. perhaps you're not putting it in correctly. you should ask your mother this...maybe she'll have some tips or advice. it's hard for us over the computer to help you.

ps, it may be uncomfortable to ask your mom about this, but it will help you.
