If that were me, I would change my appearance and my name first. My first thought is without doing so, then NO not respected as a "real" actor/actress.

Not really. Traci Lords crossed-over (appeared in the John Waters' film "Cry Baby") without much success. Simon Rex has done some television, with some success, but I don't know if he's respected.
