If there is no food, there are no bugs. Keep things up off the floor, sweep and mop as often as you can, keep food in air tight containers. I know its hard with kids... even things like tooth paste and bathroom soaps should be kept up away from where bugs can crawl on them.
You can also blomb the house with a pesticide fogger. You and the kids will have to leave for atleast two hours, you yourself will come back and open all the windows and turn on some fans, and come back in another couple hours. Its non toxic when you follow the instructions. You'll cover all your surfaces, furnatures and clothes, wash all the fabrics and sheets used to cover furnature, wash all surfaces after and vacuume after.
We always did this in any house we moved into, all of my siblings are alive and well, and we didnt live with bugs.
Also, theres a great spray on the market that is non toxic once dry, and it leaves a residue that any bug will not cross. its called bug stop, you can buy it at wall mart in the pesticide isle. great stuff. works for months.

Keep the hosue very clean
Do not leave any food particles in the kitchen etc
And kill the cockroaches and clean the palce immediately
Also boric acid mixed with dry mil and sugar will also perhaps do the job. But the first option is the best and can also be used in combination with the second. Good luck!

Boric acid will work, you can get it at the drug store or Walmart. I think you need to mix it with something else but I'm not sure what. You can also find some commercial products that use boric acid. Do a web search for "boric acid roaches" you'll find several references.
Geckos work great if you can find some. We had them in Houston and there wasn't a roach anywhere.
Large roach hotels are also pretty good because you can put them near baseboards under furniture where kids can't get to them.

Mix 1 and a half cups of Arm and Hammer baking soda with a tablespoon of Domino sugar. Sprinkle it in tight corners and cracks and crevices. The sugar will lure the cockroaches. Once they walk through the baking soda and it will get on they're legs. They will lick they're legs clean, and since cockroaches cannot digest baking soda, they're stomaches explode internally.

An honestly available product for ants is "Terro Ant Killer". A drop or 2 placed on the offered cardboard tabs will entice the ants which will then carry the product lower back to the nest the position it is going to kill all of them. It contains Borax for killing the ants. a answer of Borax in water ought to correctly be sprayed round cupboard bases and walls for roaches.

The roaches are hazardous! Call an exterminator and go to a friends for a few hours while they do a proper job.

You need to move or paint the apt. There is also a peanut based substance that the exterminators have that works real well but if you cannot afford it, get some of those glue traps and set them down.

Sounds weird but works...Get a bunch of geckos, like the one in the commercials, set them free. They'll eat everything available then leave.
