hmm... I think people are getting a little occupied with the old 'lets all hate the English' thing here...

Some Scottish do hate the English... this is true... but it's sort of tradition which does date back to the history between the two countries but is now more based on local sport.

It's a little unfair to say that the English treated the Gaelic peoples like animals as what you have to remember is that most of England was also Gaelic in one form or another... it's just that, like today, England had absorbed a lot of culture from the continent as well.

Saying that the Irish hates the English because we treated them like animals is also a little inaccurate. Why the English got a 'bad rep' in say Northern Ireland had more to do with the potato famine. Potato Blight (which is a rotting disease) affected potato crops across Ireland for several years and the then British Government simply did not have the money to offer any kind of aid as all the cash had been used up in wars with the Spanish and French.

But... back to Scotland... There was always a colourful history of war between the two countries but that was hundreds and hundreds of years ago... Today Scotland is fairly dependant on the tourist trade from around the world and especially England... so, your unlikely to hear many Scottish Hoteliers, B&B owners, Golf Course owners or any other tourist based businessmen saying they 'hate the English'.

You've got to remember... some people, from all countries and walks of life, have bitter, lonely lives and will try and find any social division, however tenuious and try to exploit it as a vehicle to incite hatred...

The fact that the English, Scottish and Welsh have been sharing the same lump of rock for millenia, trading with each other and interbreeding cross-border for centuries doesn't seem to register.

English and Scottish will always joke with each other about things like their national Football and Rugby teams and the competition we have with each other but at the end of the day a real, proud Scotsman or Englishman would stand shoulder to shoulder with the other... as between 'real' Scotsmen and Englishmen there is true respect for 'the old enemy'..

In past times when the British Empire was vast and strong the Elglish occupied Scotland. There where some English Nobles . along with some of the Royal family that committed horibble acts against the Scotish peoples. This for some is not easy to forget or forgive.

Dates back into history, Scotland never wanted to be part of Britain. England invaded Scotland and there was ferocious fighting, very similiar to when England invaded Ireland except most of Ireland didnt end up being part of Britain.
Anyway the english never treated the gaelic countries they conquered with respect or dignity, they treated them like animals. This led to mass rebellion in Ireland and even though Scotland felt the same they never succeeded and they've been feeling bad annoyed at England for it to this day.

I lived up on the Isle of Skye for years and I can honestly say... Real highlanders are the sort of the Earth.
I know I was NEVER short of female company... Londoner or NOT.
The problem is the Rab C Nessbits for glasgow... who all think they are 'Jimmy Boyle' and faceless, fudge packing, gutless ,morons (edward e, george l and jp) who voice their opinions and create hatred.
