There are easy to use grid repair kits available from your local
autozone or similar store.

These only work for a damaged grid (the lines you see printed across the back glass) if a terminal has loosened from the glass you will need to have it soldered back in place by your glass company.

Before attempting a repair make sure the glass is well cleaned.
(you mention the glass specifically, check to make sure the rest of the system is in good working order)

i understand what you're speaking about and that i understand there's a way that is more cost-effective and receives round this example. before each and every thing the window is too sparkling. Get a paper towel a million sheet and some liquid dishsoap like sunlight. Now squeeze a honest quantity onto the towel and wipe the back window. Use purely the a million towel sq. no count how soaked it receives with dish cleansing soap. you at the on the spot are not attempting to sparkling the window 100% - you want to leave in the back of a skinny layer of cleansing soap on the exterior of the glass. Which kinda makes the window seem kinda smeary once you're up close yet once you're sitting interior the drivers seat that's hardly significant. this gained't fog up. you could tell what's in the back of you. Rear window defrosters sparkling the contained in the glass first. in case you get carry of frost on the exterior-you get carry of to bodily scrape that off.- same is going for snow basically lasts all wintry climate.

depending what is wrong with the defroster.
if some of the grids are not heating up, then there is possibly a break in that grid. there is a solution that can be painted over the grid to correct that. i have heard fingernail polish will work.
put some tape on each side of the grid where you suspect the break is, just enough to leave a line in between and start painting.

if the wire connector end is broken off the glass, then the connector end needs to be replaced or soldered on. that is a little tricky and most shops that can do that, will not because most of the times it is a child that breaks it off. the shop does not want warranty it because the same kid will break it again. the shop does not want to do it a second time for free.

check the fuse to the defroster. If it's good there may be a diode gone bad. diodes allow the current to run only one way in a circuit. If there are no bad diodes there may be a broken or burnt out wire in the window itself or in the circuit if that's case you will have to replace the window. The diodes are found on the small circuit board which the switch to the defroster is mounted

The best thing to do is to replace the window, It will be costly, but you will be better off in the long run. You are dealing with heating elements in the glass. Some places can do a temporary quick fix, but there is no guarentee it will last or even work.

Find a junk yard that carries your back glass, that is the cheapest route.

To buy new is expensive.

Use to be self stick heating elements back in the 1980's but I haven't seen them in ages.

To attempt to patch, jump wire any gaps, etc will result in a short or could result in a fire.

it is much easier, though more costly, to just replace the window
