I own my company. I have hundreds of employees. I insist that if they are too tired to perform their physical tasks, that they go home to sleep. I certainly do not want anyone hurt because of fatigue. However, if they are involved in project which does not involve risky physical labor, if a quick nap, say 20 minutes, works, fine. I cannot keep up my 15 hour days without a siesta, so why should I expect anyone else to do so. If your question is should I sleep at work so I can have more time for my personal life after work, hell no.

The neat thing about this life is that we can do whatever we want whenever we want. The not so neat thing is that we have to deal with the consequenses, and sometimes, that's not a good thing.
I used to work a security job from 6PM-6AM Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I worked 36 hours between when most people left on Friday and returned on Monday, and in many ways was very cool. The bad thing about that is that my weekends were shot. I'd need to sleep at least like 6 hours between those shifts and it didn't leave much time to play. When I didn't get my sleep, I'd secure the doors, take the walky-talky with me, and take a nap in the board room. I was off video camera and if anyone questioned me, the walky talky would wake me up and I "saw something on the monitor that I wanted to go check out." The walky-talky would wake me up for my hourly radio checks, and also if anyone needed to come in.
Was this ethical or good planning? Probably not. It was better planning than my co-worker who got fired for sleeping at the front desk. I could've gotten away with it longer, but I wound up quitting when that co-worker got fired because he was supposed to cover my shift the night of my little brother's 30th birthday party, and they supposibly didn't have anyone else to cover for that one night...so guess what? They had to cover all three of my nights that week, and for the rest of that contract!

As a general rule, no way! From a company standpoint, you're being paid to work not sleep. If you're too tired to work, that's your problem.
Now there are some companies, especially overseas ones that foster it. For example, in Japan where people work such long hours, naps are common.
And it's not uncommon in the US for people to grab a quick nap in their office. Their assistant can handle things for a little while. But is it encouraged? Not really.
The worst thing that could happen is somebody walks in, especially a superior (supervisor) and sees you sleeping on the job. That's reason for dismissal.
So I personally wouldn't encourage it. A better route to go is either seek alternate employment, see if you can cut back on tasks and/or hours, or use part of your break or lunch time to grab a quick snooze outside the office.

Your boss dose not pay you to sleep on the job. This is his time, his money and a good way to get fired. If you really need sleep try going to bed early so you can do your best every day. I have found this really help you get a great nights rest and feel your best when you know you have done all you can at your job, then your off time is much more enjoyable

Depends on the type of job you do and your ranking in the pecking order. You have to ask yourself though what you would do if you owned a company and the guy you hired was sleeping on the job in order to devote less of his free time to sleep.
