Public transportation is the best option, then a bicycle, but if you absolutely must have a car, then definitely choose a smaller vehicle because many campuses have streets designed for parallel parking, which can be difficult with a larger vehicle.

You will need a vehicle that gets good city gas mileage, so look into four cylinder vehicles that offer FlexFuel options because I'm sure college campuses will be among the first to have E85 ethanol available because of the large amount of environmentally students in college.

Public transportation, you even get a reduction of rates because you are a "student".

Think of it , no gas, no insurance, no car payment, you have it made in the shade.
