Get in their world, talk about what they are interested in. Listen to them. Ask about their life and listen. Check what they are doing (gameboy? skateboarding? comic books? dressing in black?) then ask about it and really try to listen and find out what they think.
Take them to do something they like - bowling for example.

welll how young r they matters
if u r a parent dont bother them by nosy manner try it at meals and tell them abt ur day(not the hectic part)
if u wanna make pals with one try being cool and over do ur self with the trend
if u r a teacher try being calm hav excersises in class that are current like sex issues
i still dont know how young u mean so thats it
