If you have a rectangular-shaped face, you do not want to make your face look thinner, but shorter.
One of the best makeup tricks is to use blushers and highlighters to create illusion.
If you use a darker skin-tone blush on your lower cheeks...darker than your foundation...and use a light highlighter on the cheekbones, it will make your face appear wider through the cheek area and thus take away some of the rectangular look to your face. Be sure to blend the two shades so there is a natural appearance.
Also, using a dark shade, (either complimentary or the same color as the color on your eye lids) at the outer eye of your under brow wll give your eyes a wider, larger appearance on your face. This will accent the width thru the cheek/eye area, too.

You need to give the illusion of widening and shortening the face,, While softening the jawline,Horizontal lines make the face look wider,so emphasize your eyebrows, cheeckbones and lips...
Eyebrows:: Use a brow pencil to slightly extend the outer ends of your eyebrows adding width..
Eyeshadow:: Layer toning colours horizontally, working from the centre of the eye outwards..
Blusher:: Follow the lines of your cheeckbones adding more definition near the hairline..
Lipstick:: Make your mouth look slightly wider when you line your liips,,but keep it looking natural..
Also apply a sweep of blusher along the hairline at cheekbone level to draw the eye outwards
Hairstyle:: A layered style will help give the impression that your face is rounder and fuller. A softly layered crown is good,,as is some fullness around the ear area,, A fringe will also make your face appear shorter,,avoid long, straight styles with a centre parting,,as these will make your face look longer..
Spectacles:: Lightweight, wider frames will counteract a narrow face and close-set eyes; avoid angular frames..
Earrings:: Choose curvy shapes that add volume to your earlobes, avoid long, dangly styles...
Hoped this helped : )

Emphasize the eyes with a good liner and some mascara, steer clear of blush, and play up the lips with a good berry that matches your skintone.
