Its actually legal in Latin America, Europe and Asia. Plus its been proven that the chances of your kids having diseases are pretty slim, even if the parents are 1st cousins. So why the taboo?

It is true that if 1st cousins were to get together the offspring probably would not be affected. But in medeivel times cousins marrying was common and after several reoeated generation of doing so problems began to happen. This is why some say that a lot of the royalty from centuries back had a lot of mental problems.

It's really on first cousins that I am aware of being a taboo because of perceived genetic issues. This has been largely disproven (can't quote a source and I am not an expert). The taboo remains.

There is an internal kind of taboo that inhibits most people from having that kind of interest in people that they live with as family.

Not only is sex between cousins, as you say, perfectly legal in Europe, Latin America and much of Asia, it's also legal in many US states.

According to Wikipedia: "Twenty-four [US] states prohibit marriages between first cousins, and another seven permit them only under special circumstances. Utah, for example, permits first cousins to marry only provided both spouses are over age 65, or at least 55 with evidence of sterility. North Carolina permits first cousins to marry unless they are 'double first cousins' (cousins through more than one line). Maine permits first cousins to marry only upon presentation of a certificate of genetic counseling. The remaining nineteen states and the District of Columbia permit first-cousin marriages without restriction."

Oddly enough, sex between same-sex cousins, or even siblings, isn't illegal (always assuming neither party is a minor). So if you're male, screwing your sister can get you in jail, but you and your bro can have all the bedroom fun you want. Which does suggest that the taboo is due to fear of genetic dysfunction.

It most likely dates to pre-industrial societies, which were not very mobile. People generally married within their extended clan and were rather similar genetically. Thus the chances of genetically inherited diseases was much, much higher. Since the invention of the automobile, not to mention other forms of transportation, the gene pool has undergone a transformation, with much more mixing of genetic traits.

I am of the opinion that the Internet will prove to be one of the most dynamic sources of genetic mixing ever developed. Thus the prohibition against intermarriage between cousins will become less and less of an issue.

Because some people seem to think that any family member do not need to be together.
I will say that this not always the case I am married and with my 2 cousin we have been together for 2 years now but know him now for 40 years.
But I am sure some need to be careful with having kids but that is not our case I can't have kids through surgery along time ago.

because inbreeding is counterproductive to the type of a healthful species. Granted, cousin-cousin isn't as close a pairing as some (and is in many circumstances proper in animal husbandry), it truly is somewhat close for convenience for most individuals.

Having children with someone that is that closely blood related can cause birth defects for one. And most of us are just as close if not closer to our cousins as we are our brothers and sisters and honestly to most of us, that is not appealing...
