Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to want to work for it. The wiring seems okay, and the software says there are no conflicts. What's left?

Okay, that's interesting. The volume controls didn't include microphone controls. Found 'em, though, and sure enough, it was muted. I'm running Win 98, so some of these ideas don't apply directly. What's frustrating is that it seems that nothing makes a difference.

Maybe it's the mike.

well there could be two possibilities,
1) The mic itself is bad.
2) The computer is recording sound from a different source.

To check to make sure it's not the second possibly, right click on the little speaker icon in the system tray and pick "open volume controls" from there you want to pick "options" then "properties"
now in the window that pops up it gives you the option to "adjust volume for" you want to select "recording" also make sure that in the spot where it says "show the following volume controls" that there is a check in the box next to mic.
Then click on okay, on that window there should be a bunch of check boxes on the bottom marked select make sure the one in the mic column is checked

As far as I know, usually no 'installation' is required... you just plug it into the proper port, make sure any switches on the thing are turned on, and open up software that uses the microphone. However, you might check the volume control panel (either the standard one or one that goes with your sound card), as there is a Microphone volume slider and/or mute function which may be active.

Right-click on the volume icon in the lower right of your screen. Left-click " open volume controls". Next, left-click on the "advanced" tab at the lower right of the window, next check to see that "mic boost" is checked, if not, check it. Close the window out, now try your mic.
