It has been replaced my consumerisum, greed and selfishness. nto to metion poorly planned and developed suburbias that are not conductive to social interaction beyond waving to a neighbor as they get the mail or mow their lawn.

not to metion most of the media has now gone to "shock" value in order to gain an audiance the catch phrase "Something you use in everyday life could kill you.. more after a word from our sponsers". A lot of people think what they see on TV is a reflection of the real world. Many people in the world watched "Dallas" and thought all americans wore cowboy hats and had longhorns on the hood of thier cars. Even shows like "Cosby" "Fresh prince" and "A differant world" made people think Blacks were more prevalent then they actaully were.

Ethics has gone to the way side as people have found out it is easier to lie, cheat, and pass blame to advance thier careers then to be honest and trustworthy. A perfect example is watching "The apprentice" and seeing the people on the hot seat do everything but take responsibility for thier failings.

As people have lost religion everything else went with it. Whats to stop people having no ethics, morals or any respect for their fellow human being? Unless you are a genuine nice person you will do anything you can get away with it. For a lot of people life has become so self-centered. Young people are thought to stand out from the crowd and do everything to succeed. They are told to be number 1, so obviously they will care less about other people otherwise they wont achieve their objectives. There are still a few people with morals but they are in the minority. Im afraid it will only get worse and society will only degrade further, today's youth will be tomorrows parents.

This may be one of the great timeless questions. People have
been asking it since humans first invented civilization,I think.
Our society is changing at a faster rate than ever before, though,
so now it could be more relevant than it ever has been.
In my opinion the big problem of our society today is the break-up
of the traditional family unit. Single-parent families have produced
neglected, undisciplined kids who continue the cycle when they
have their own. Most of them are raised in relative poverty as they
are usually brought up by their mothers in a world where women make less money than men for the same job. As a result, their
options are more limited and they are more exposed to more negative things like crime and drug use. Maybe these factors have produced some people who just aren't as interested in ethics and values.

Buddy, search the real people within you and think whether are you following the Ethics and the moral values, then you can understand what really has happened to our society. For, trust me, if a person as an individual takes care of himself and his or her family then the whole world will taken care by its own.

Human societies achieve cohesiveness by enforcing social rules, unfortunately these rules are painful to those in outgroups or those who do not conform. Largely as a result of the European religious wars that lasted a few centuries people began to try to be more tolerant of others so there would be less strife - this was recognized as a social good and was especially important in the "melting pot" of the USA.

Part of the process has involved the weakening of strong social structures such as the church. A lot of that was done deliberately based on social theories that held the church responsible for committing many injustices and for failing to fight others.

A lot of this came from the ideas promoted by Jean Jaques Rousseau and others who saw man in nature as noble and civilization as corrupting. There were a lot of "scientific" studies done to show that this was true, a significant example is the work of Margaret Meade in Samoa which has now been widely contested. There is now a lot of work being done that shows that man in nature is quite capable of violence, theft, and murder, frequently even much moreso than twentieth century man with all his wars and mega-deaths inflicted in purges by men like Stalin and Mao.

Personally, I believe that we have swung too far in that direction and the result is a lot of the crime and social breakdown you see, especially in the cities. The idea that you can hold a society together without anybody getting their feelings hurt is just silly. The extreme cases, such as letting sociopaths out of jail believing them "cured", have spotlighted our limited ability to shape the behavior of men without strong social institutions, flawed though they may be.

With the population and resource problems we have things are likely to get worse before they get better, but they WILL get better. Man is just built that way.

They're everywhere. They simply don't match yours. Open your eyes a little more and try to be a little more objective. You'll find what you're looking for.
