Hi. I have made the mistake of filling up a diesel engine car (Rover 25 TDI) with petrol. The car drove the short distance home fine. Is there any way of sorthing this out without calling the garage? Thanks.

I will call the garage if it is definatly needed, but there were no problems driving home from the gas/petrol station, therefore I assume that no petrol has gone through to the engine yet.

Depending on how much gasoline (petrol) that you put in, and the amount of diesel that was already in the tank, you may have gotten lucky. Do not drive or start the vehicle again. Drain the tank, either with a siphon or by removing it. Refill it with diesel. Change your fuel filter, and hope for the best.

A small amount of gasoline mixed with diesel fuel will not harm the motor. In cold climates truckers will sometimes add a bit of gas to their fuel (50:1 ratio or so) to help prevent fuel gelling.

Well this is easy enough to fix. A Buddie of mine did the same thing and had his towed to a dealership. The cost was just over $500.00. Now you can fix this problem and only be out the price of the fuel and new filters. First get yourself enough gas cans to hold all of the fuel in the tank. Siphon all of the fuel possible from the tank, remove and replace the filters. Gas has a lower combustion temperature and thus it will fire in a diesel engine before the piston can reach the top. Diesel fires after top dead center. The heat for combustion is created as the air is compressed into the combustion chamber. Diesel also has a lubricating advantage for the top end of the engine. After all of the filters are changed, fill the tank with the proper fuel prime or bleed the air from the fuel system thus forcing the gas out of the lines. problem should be solved. Since all of the gas will not be out of the tank I would fill back up with diesel after burning a half tank out, further diluting the remaining gas. You could remove the fuel tank and drain all of the fuel that way. I am not familiar with the tank construction on this model. Does the tank have a drain on the bottom, if so this just simplifies the process. I have seen this before and you should not have done any damage to the engine. Good luck.

Can do it man is on the money, there is one thing I can add no pun intended but you can drain all you can then add a quart of motor oil, the normal 10-30. run that lower and fill with tow gallons with a diluting of oil and diesel and 1 to 4 do this when the engine is cold and watch the temp and do not run it up just let it ideal, the bummer is it will take time. once that is done change out the filters, and fill with diesel you should be good if you did not blow out the head gasket or the top end. also if you want and add some oil to the gas you have stored can can throw a gallon in once winter comes back just check it to make sure the is no mold or fungus growing.

if you are quite a good mechanic yourself, you already have the answer somewhere in your head. However if you aren't one then the most suitable thing you can do now is try to make use of a pump to pump out the petrol inside.

If all else fails, don't try to make thing a further mess and just call the garage. It isn't wrong to admit that you have comitted a mistake.

Not good, but you may be lucky. Get the mix out of there and refill with diesel and change the filter. With luck no noticeable damage done. It sort of depends on how far you drove, how fast, and exactly what the mix was. Save the mixed fuel for your lawn mower, weedwacker or snowblower.

I think I would at least phone the garage to see what they suggest. Especially if you have a guy that you trust to give you an honest answer. But, a car's a pretty expensive toy to take a chance w....

Sorry, there isn't.

Call the tow company. Don't drive it until the system is drained. Hopefully there hasn't been any damage to the engine.

I can't believe you got 50K before you realized a problem...LOL, If anything your plugs should be changed, your fuel filter should be replaced and have your injectors cleaned. Other than that you should be ok.
