I do have plants around the edge.

I live in Florida and between the heat and the rain it is green in two days. There are plants planted on the edges and when bleach is added the over spray kills the plants. The birds and local cats love to drink from it. Yuck, I know.

In florida, the temperatures should be good enough for that. They won't get it all, and will poo, but this is to help in between cleanings, right?
In florida, the temperatures might even be warm enough that you could go to your tropical fish store, and get an algae eater for the fountain. Of course, if there's several pools in the fountain, or if the fountain is very small, the snails would be better.

You can try snails but they leave slimy poopy mess of their own. Better to put in some chlorine or household bleach once a week. Is it so big you can't clean it? what kind is it? does it have recirculating water? Gotta keep chlorine in it or all the parts and tubes will gum up with algae and may not last long.
