I have been to the below website and can find prices for tickets and routes, but no schedules.

How many trains run this route per day and how long does it take?

Should I book these tickets in advance and can I buy the day of?

Also, what is the difference between "Hikari and Kodama trains" and "Nozomi trains"? They both seem to go from Hakata to Tokoyo for about the same price.

Nozomi is the fastest shinksen.
Hikari stops at some stops but not all.
Kodama stops at ALL stops. From Fukuoka to Tokyo you dont want this one.

The site you have is a good one.

It'll take at least 6-7 hours. You dont have to buy in advance. You can buy that day.

Go to Fukuoka Station for an exact time.
I love Fukuoka. Have fun there.

About 3 Nozomis an hour. Takes about 5 and a quarter hours by Nozomi.

You can buy tickets at any JR station both in advance and on that day. But you might not be able to get a reserved seat at that day if crowded.

Nozomi is fastest, Hikari is faster and Kodoma is slowest. Hikari and Kodama don't run to Tokyo and you have to transfer at some station, mostly Shin-osaka station. Only Nozomi runs to Tokyo.

You want to depart from Hakata and reach at Tokyo?
If so, time table is here. Probably you can read Hanzi (zhong wen中文)
(I prefer to flying such long distance.)

The 6-23 on the left with grey bar means, from 6:00 in the morning to 23:00(11PM). and each colored numbers are departure time.
Remember, Shinkansen never delay and do not wait anybody basically. Don't miss it.

Nozomi is orange color.
Hikari is red. and Blue is Kodama.
Nozomi is fastest.

Click departure time, you will see which station each train stop. レ means train skip that station.
Some trains are easy to be full. go to the nearest JR station or travel agency one day before and book your seat.

You don't need reservations, but you may end up standing if you buy walk-up tickets. You don't really need a schedule because if you miss one train, you'll only have to wait 20 minutes or so.
