Usually the dumbest answers are accompanied by some sort of reference to the bible. It makes me think people don't have a mind of their own.

Because they have no original thought and must have the information quoted for them in order to simplify their existence into some neat little box, with a bow.

Perhaps the Bible references are not stupid, maybe the people using them are. But I can't be totally sure of that, either. I am a Christian, but I do not believe in throwing the Bible in people's faces, especially when they have a question about something. If you haven't had much exposure to the Bible, or the exposure you have had is negative, than it does no good to shove Bible verses at you. And remember that not all people answering with a Bible verse are stupid or afraid of change or strict. Some have found great joy and hope in the Bible because they believe it to be God's Word. That's not stupid. However, people will always try to shove their beliefs in your face, whether they are Christians or not. I've met people who believe that there is no absolute truth and try very adamantly to convince me that they are true! That kind of attitude, whether it comes from a Christian or an agnostic or a mystic, is stupid.

I believe that people answer questions with stupid Bible References because they have had this instilled in them from a very early age. People who are not curious do not question and test what they have been taught, only accept that if the Biblical answer fits then it is accepted.
I find that the average person will do everything in their power to avoid being in a position of looking stupid or not fitting in with the 'norm'. As a result they will stand in the longest line at the grocery store or at a toll both etc so that someone will not tell them they are in the wrong line (if everyone else is here we can't all be wrong).
This relates to the question as these people feel that the biblical answers are 'above' normal skepticism or that no one would dare to challenge such a widely held belief, whether it be right or wrong.

Some people will answer your question with a bible reference.

Quoting the Bible is easier than thinking for oneself.

People who have been educated to think critically wil not respond in this way. People who do answer with a Bible reference seem to believe that the Bible is part of all systems of justice, which it isn't.

The Bible was written by men.

It gives them a chance to show off. It shows how educated people are and how much knowldge they have that they can relate a bible verse to a situation in real life. Of course if you do not belive in god then it does not hold much water.
But reading the bible as an agnostic is always a good idea. I recomend it. Not to "hear gods words" but you will understand much about our mondern world by understanding the bible.

What's wrong with quoting words from the Bible... after all it was written by God... He is far wiser than any human could ever claim to be.

Have you actually taken the time to read it with an open mind...you never know...maybe God might just speak to you.

Why don't you try reading the Bible for yourself. You might find out the references aren't as dumb as you think they are.

Why do so many people cite Wikipedia?

Whether you subscribe to the belief system or not, the Bible has withstood the test of time. Anybody can post to Wiki.

It is comes down to how one chooses to ground their beliefs.

Because those who think the reference is stupid are themselves unable to understand Gods message to mankind.and therefore destined to be lost.
