As you use your hard drive, blocks of information for a file spread across the hard drive, wherever there is room. This “fragmentation” of the information in a file can lead to a significant slow-down in file access times because the disk’s read/write head must move all over the disk, looking for the various portions of a file. Disk Defragmenter arranges the blocks of information for a file into adjacent blocks on your hard drive, which may significantly improve the file access times.

A disk defragmenter is a computer program designed to increase access speed (and sometimes increase the amount of usable space) by rearranging files stored on a disk to occupy contiguous storage locations. Disk defragmenters are available for many platforms, the most common being those included with operating systems (i.e. Microsoft Windows), utility packages (like Norton Utilities), or other standalone defragmenters (like PerfectDisk or Diskkeeper). ...

as files get created and deleted, the tend to get fragmented across the disk. This means that differerrent parts of a file will be in different places on a disk.
A defragmenter, reorganizes the files so that they are contiguous, and not split up. This improves performance because the read heads do not have to seek all over the disk for different parts of a file.

Hi,
A computer's hard disk is made up of multiple disks. The computer logically divides each disk into lots of concentric circles - called tracks (many tracks in the same position on multiple disks are called cylinders). These concentric circles are divided up again into equally sized portions - called sectors.

The size of a sector is small compared to the size of a image for example. So when you save an image, or other file, on your computer it needs to spilt the information up into chuncks small enought to fit in a sector and writes them to many sectors. Ideally the information should be written to contiguous sectors, but often this doesn't happen because other information has already been written to subsequent sectors - when this happens the read/write heads in the hard drive have to move to another part of the disk - this takes time.

So, when you defragment your hard drive the defragmenter moves files that are scattered around the hard drive to contiguous sectors - so your read/write heads have less distance to travel and accessing your data should be quicker.

Hope that helps.

It sorts out all the files that have been stored in different places and puts them together where they belong, it can speed up your file access time. defragmenter is a computer program designed to increase access speed (and sometimes increase the amount of usable space) by rearranging files stored on a disk to occupy contiguous storage locations.

it places "errant" files back in their order, and frees up disk space and access speed to those programs.
during the course of operation of a computer files and programs become jumbled and the defrag sets them straight.

Defrag reorders where data on your hard drive is stored so it can be more quickly accessed by the File Allocation Table (FAT) or other file management system.
