I'm a forty-eight year old educated single woman living in the UK.
I use this site becuase I think it gives me an insight as to how people from all over the place think and feel- and it is a good forum for dialogue between people who would otherwise never meet.
I find it truly democratic and love the way you get complete nutcases asking ridiculous questions, yet also genuine people finding out where the nearest painter and decorator is!
I can be silly and serious, helpful and sarcastic.
Yes, it is a bit sad that I don't have better things to do with my time, but until Prince charming comes along- it is a great way to spend time!

I think that some of the questions asked may be both edifying and self ingratiating. If one attempts to answer every question asked that too could be a cause to seek therapy. Some of the demographics at work here are that the people who ask legitimate questions really want an answer, they have access to a computer and the Internet.

Yes, in some sense answering these questions is providing morally useful information. At least those who truly want to help others are. Some people though are just wasting time and you can tell by their answers or the questions they ask. I guess it depends on the individual and the type of person he or she is. As far as self ingratiating, well some are looking to please others, and gain somebody’s approval, especially in order to gain an advantage.

I suppose the demographics would depend on the category of the question asked. I believe, for the most part people from all walks of life answer these questions.

As best as I've gathered the demographics run the whole rail from pre teens to the venerated elderly. I find this format a tonic to the spirit, restoring my faith in humanity and shocking me on occasion to my heart by the pain or anger presented in some questions or answers. I am kept greatly amused by this pass time and have found that it compliments my other interests rather than interferes. I've acquired insights from very generous individuals as well as words of encouragement that caused my spirits to soar. I would therefore agree with your question/comment and I thank you for asking it.

The jury is still out on the analysis of edifying and self-engraciating----but it is a great release of daily tensions for me--I get an opportunity to see a major cross section of the world's concerns --- a good deal of what people find funny--- display of a goodly amount of ignorance ---an occasional burst of unbelievable insight and brilliance ---alot of variant views from other parts of the world---all in one place---I get an opportunity to share some of my life experience with folks---occasionally help someone out and free myself of the pressures of my own little space in the world for a time----I guess I would call it more theropudic than any other thing--at least for me

The people who are as you and I are varied in this electronic environment...the beauty of it all is that this environment has come to epitomize the words of .."a meeting of the minds" I think we are building upon each others words which is and are indeed;edifying.
Whether it be self-ingratiating or not is debatable, rather I'd say that it is as you stated; "edifying" whereby these constructive replys enables a person to present and identify their self or best character in print, as construed, together.
or
something like that.

Peace.

Now this is a good question. I wish I could help! In my personal opinion, I think the majority of the question askers are under the age of 18. I have only come across about 15% of SERIOUS questions.....most of the questions on here are "am I fat"....."does this girl/boy like me"....etc.......

.Self ingratiating? No, I have no need to suck up to anyone. Edifying? Sure, I've learned a lot. ( Like how to spell self ingratiating) I also think you meant self gratifying.

Certainly when you ask a question you are in need of a solution to a problem that may be troubling you.
As for me, it does not matter who those people are that answer my question. The important thing is to resolve your problem.

Are you showing off with all those long words. Were you given a dictionary as a present? No sweat, keep asking.
