if the stumps are from bushes the should be less than 3 or 4 inches across... if larger it might take more time and more holes but still should work
#1 cut them as low to the ground as possible
#2 drill 5 to 7 3/16th inch holes as deep as possible
#3 pour round up concentrate plus into the holes
#4 wait 4 weeks
if new growth appears repeat steps 3 and 4
in no new growth appears
#5 bury stump 4 inches deep and plant over it with any thing you want.....
if you bury it and wait a year or two the stump will rot underground and soften so you can dig it out completely in time....this may take a couple of years or more depending on size

Shovel, axe, folding pruning saw, and beer.

Dig down a bit, if you can tilt the stump around, you can usually axe it up pretty good. If not, the pruning saw has a pretty narrow blade that can cut through the bad spots pretty quick. A few feet underground, most roots left will die before they can get shoots to reach the sky, and if they do, it's pretty easy to get them up.

The beer is for medicinal use AFTER you have put away all the other equippment. You may choose alternative home remedies for back pain and dryness of the throat if you prefer, but having the remedy ready is reccomended.

In this case, I don't think easy and cheap are going to work together. Easy would be having someone take them out for you such as a service that specializes in stump removal. If you live in the country and know someone with a tractor you could ask them if they would do it for you. Cheap would be to do it yourself. You could dig them out a little at a time. It would be labor intensive for you, but you wouldn't have to pay yourself. If you have strong backed relatives, you could ask for their help too. If all else fails, purchase large planters to set on the leveled off stumps and make them part of your lawn decorations. Good luck!

when I had this problem I was told to drill small holes in the flat stump and pour creosote in them.
I never actually did this because I moved house and left the tree stumps behind- but you could try it!!
