Because they ARE different countries.

I wish some sports like tennis would realise this and let countries like Scotland, where i come from, participate for themselves.

It's kinda ironic. Whenever Scotland, Ireland or Wales become good at something, it's under the banner of the "UK".

Keats: last time I looked, a state wasn't a country. Anyway, the US have oodles of arrogance in the form of The World Series. And YES, Scotland has its own parliament.... don't you read stuff?

Can the Parliament of Scottland do that for British troops?.... No, but they can veto the use of Scottish troops

Is the Parliament of Scottland autonomous of the British Parliament? .... Scotland has gone through devolution and will hopefully be totally autonomous soon.

Before the EU, did Scottland use Scottish money or lbs sterling? We still have unique Scottish notes today.

Scotland has only one "t".

Ya know, that is a great question. Why can't the U.S. put 50 teams in the World Cup? One for each state... I guess it is because the spirit of nationalism is still so strong in Great Britain that they feel like they need 4 teams instead of 1.

I see people saying they are separate countries. Are there 4 Parliaments? 4 Queens? Do they have 4 representatives to the U.N.? Seems like a cop out to me.

And it is nothing like the European Union declaring that it should have one team. The entire European Union is made up of countries that have their own governments. Is Scottland a member of the European Union, or is Great Britain?

Look again...one definition of "state."

A body politic, especially one constituting a nation: the states of Eastern Europe. So I suppose that the State of Israel is not a nation? The United States is a Union of separate states...just like Great Britain is. Pennsylvania has its own Congress too. But it can't order the military of the United States into war. Can the Parliament of Scottland do that for British troops? Is the Parliament of Scottland autonomous of the British Parliament?
