My friend is a social worker and has worked in collections before. She is looking for a position where she can live on site and help manage the property while she concentrates on writing a book. Any ideas would be appreciated.

If you are renting now, contact the owner and tell them you would be willing to manage the apartment building you are in now in exchange for rent and a phone. You would be willing to pay your own utilities of course. Do everything you can to make the place a better place to live. Keep units clean and painted, repair locks, plumbing, heating, etc (whatever needs fixing). Each week give the owner a list of intended repairs and receipts for the previous weeks work. (They provide the cash for materials) Then once you have worked there a year, go to a better (bigger) place and apply before you move in saying you have experience. Because the place is bigger you would then need a salary in addition to the rent and phone. That first year is tough because you have to work a side job to pay expenses.
