I am running XP too and have Avg on it. I don't have any trouble unless I run another anti-virus program at the same time. Trying to run more than one anti-virus program at a time causes problems. I don't know if this will help you or not good luck.

First AOL is a major headache for me, so I don't use it and don't recomment it, but on to your problem. do you have an AOL virus checker, and if so DUMP IT.
You can't have 2 anti-virus at the same time.
AVG is getting you in Safe mode to protect your computer from any other damage.
I recomment the following programs and try all of them before installing AVG to see if they can clear out some Malware causing the trouble.
It's also possable your computer has been so corrupted that nothing can clear out or correct all the damage done by Malware. Then reformatting is the only solution. Thats a last resort though. try all of the following first.
I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows Updated)
The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.
These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.
The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

Let me tell you this...AOL is absolute crap.!! it messes with many things on your computer including Norton and many security defences. Also if you try to delete AOL you will find it very difficult and it will always leave parts of its program on your system. They also have a very over zealous email protection system, which blocks legit emails thinking they are spam so people dont always receive emails which have been sent to them.My advise would be to ditch Aol...have your computer re-formatted to completely erase it then use another isp.
Oh and by the way....AVG free edition is the best free edition available, and it doesnt clash with any other programs..so your problem is definately AOL doesnt like it,so it starts in safe mode..
good luck.

It could be that AVG is conflicting with something in AOL. There are known problems with AVG and AOL which you can find by doing an Internet search
AVG itself is highly rated as a free anti virus tool and I have used it for many years myself without any problems.

You'd be better asking this at http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/ , but as others have stated, AOL itself is a major headache.
In response to rjohnson, AVG's free edition is tremendous value for money---I use both free and paid for versions, and the free one offers very little less than the commercial version--I doubt very few of us need to schedule multiple scans during any 24 hour period, which is basically all the difference is. Of course some free software is 'duff'... but if you consider Firefox, and Opera (both free browsers), think about Java and Shockwave (free, without them you'd have a very static internet), you'll soon conclude that free doesn't equal shoddy or junk.

i think the problem may be aol,as i have used avg with bt,cable with no problems
aol have built in security built in their packages,so it may be a idea to disable them and then try avg,as there may be a security software conflict
the i.s.p security packages are not up to much anyway, avg would be a better choice, but try and keep your pop-up-blocker

Whatever AVG is it's free version obviously sucks a ss. Get rid of it and find something comparable. And pay for it this time!
